AGNES MARTIN

A pivotal figure in the New York art scene, Agnes Martin’s (1912–2004) roots are decidedly Canadian. Her unembellished canvases and iconic grids are often attributed to the artist’s formative years in the pairies, rural Alberta, and Vancouver. Martin strongly believed in the transformative power of art, and her tranquil, minimalist paintings representing beauty, innocence, and happiness earned her global recognition.

JEAN PAUL RIOPELLE

The monumental abstract works of Jean Paul Riopelle (1923–2002) are among the most iconic images in Canadian art. The Montreal painter’s compelling colour combinations and dynamic abstract paintings brought him to international renown. As member of Montreal’s legendary group the Automatistes and contributor to one of the most notorious Canadian art manifestos, the Refus global, Riopelle created an enduring political and artistic legacy.
